I know a bank
where the wild thyme blows, where oxlips and the nodding
violet grows,
Quite
over-canopied with luscious woodbine, with sweet
musk-roses and with eglantine.
from "A Midsummer Night's Dream"
by William Shakespeare

HALLO
AND WELCOME
The Friends of
Emsworth Waysides is a new conservation group set up
in September 2009 by local residents who were
concerned at the mowing and chemical spraying of
roadside verges and other small areas around the town.
We have suggested a number of verges and other small
areas around the town to be set aside as wayside
reserves, or mini-meadows. The Council have welcomed
the scheme and have agreed to cease mowing these areas
to allow wild flowers and grasses to grow. Our vision
is of Emsworth as a truly 'green' town with a network
of waysides, full of wild flowers and grasses, in
place of the present mono-culture of closely mown
grass.
The new group aims to
work with Havant Borough Council
* to pilot a different
approach to urban wayside management
* to foster
biodiversity throughout the town
* to create
'corridors' for the conservation of
wildlife
* to encourage
residents to take an active interest in their local
environment
* to help people
identify plants and other wildlife in the
waysides
